How to Qualify and Apply
Non-profit organizations in the Battle Creek area are welcome and encouraged to contact Kelly Boles Chapman, Vice President of Programs, for information or to set up an appointment to discuss a particular initiative or program proposal. Proposals (either mini-grant or full-grant application) must be submitted on the appropriate application form.

Q: Who is eligible to apply for grants from BCCF?
A: BCCF makes grants to non-profit organizations either located in or directly affecting the citizens of Calhoun County, and specifically, Battle Creek, Michigan. Individuals are not eligible to receive grants; however, residents of Calhoun County are encouraged to check out the BCCF scholarship database to see what opportunities may be available to further their education.

Q: How can my organization apply for funding?
A: You can download grant application or contact the Battle Creek Community Foundation via email bccf@bccfoundation.org or phone, 269-962-2181, to have one sent to you.

Q: What is the average grant amount?
A: Two options are available for organizations that apply: the mini-grant application is available for requests under $1,000. The fund decision for mini-grants is made internally, with a relatively short turnaround time. Grant requests over $1,000 are reviewed by the appropriate committee. The average grant awarded in this category is between $5,000 - $10,000.

Q: I’ve never filled out a grant application before. Where do I start?
A: The Community Foundation staff is always willing to assist organizations in any way — just contact the Program Team at the Battle Creek Community Foundation. Calhoun County (Michigan) Non-profit member organizations can also utilize the NonProfit Alliance (NPA). The NPA works to build the capacity of all sizes of non-profit organizations, including those just beginning formation. Located in Willard Library (Battle Creek, Michigan), the NPA can be reached at 269-968-8166, ext. 548, or via email to Catherine Lucas, Executive Director.Successful grant proposals will effectively articulate the following: description or mission of the organization, purpose, impact and amount of the request, plans for project evaluation, plans for sustainability, if appropriate, and comprehensive budget information. Other components such as target population, program or project history, and effect on the Battle Creek area would also complement the proposal application.
